Where I’m From

flowers (1 of 1)

I am from dresses and patent leather shoes, from cornbread, glass coke bottles, and playing in the creek.

I am from the house behind Grandpa & Grandma, a pasture with roaming cows as my backyard, the smell of corn feed lingering in the air.

I am from touch-me-not flowers, stealing kisses from snapdragons, climbing up the Dogwood tree and pulling petals off daisies to find my true love.

I am from Daddy & Momma, Grandpas & Grandmas, Aunts & Uncles, and a ton of cousins. The sound of laughter from years gone by can still be heard.

I am from  a world where high-tech gadgets didn’t exist, from long talks in person, running around and playing outside, and from days when kindness shown in most everyone you knew.

From as long as you live in my house, Sunday is a day of rest and it doesn’t matter what I used to do. All of which I can be heard saying to my own children.

I am from the little Baptist church that sits on the corner, from Saturday singings that went well into the night. From covered dish dinners with the most delicious desserts. From singing Amazing Grace & Victory in Jesus out of the church hymnal.

I’m from the South, from country folk who love God, family & friends, who never tire of helping a neighbor. I’m from green beans, squash, corn on the cob, tomatoes and turnip greens grown on the land of my beloved grandparents.

From the stories my great-grandmother used to tell about the good ‘ol days, from sitting around the table saying, remember when, from vacations where we kids camped out in the back of the car for the long ride, from catching fire flies on hot summer nights.

I am from Grandma’s attic full of pictures, vintage clothes and baby dolls, I am from Grandma’s back porch where many treasures can be found. I am from wood stoves, barns, and hot kitchens.

I am from many great things.

Where are you from?

  2. Michelle, this is wonderful. I could repeat it almost word for word and it would be “where I’m from.” Thanks for featuring Chasing Lilacs on your blog today. Some of the notes from me in the post tell who I am and the influences of my past. Could be we’ve even met at some point, you reckon?

    blessings.
