A couple weeks ago I began working with the middle & high school girls at church. Over the summer we will be going through the His Girl bible study. We are loving it.
Last night we worked through the session self-worth. Lots to cover. We actually broke this one into two sessions, I just think it is so important for young girls today to accept themselves for who they are, and not try to become who they “think” they should be by the worlds standards.
Last night I found myself learning right along with them. {Just because we are adults doesn’t mean we know everything HA! } While in conversation last night, I let the girls know that most of what they are going through, we {adult women} went through too at their age.
And then it hit me mid sentence…………. I’m talking to myself here {i think i may have even said it out loud} friends, grades, money, clear complexion, weight, hair, brand name clothing, fitting in……….. those are a couple of the things we talked about last night, and as adults do we still not get confused as to where we find our self-worth? It may not be the same things as when we were teen girls, or it very well could be, with more added to the list.
How can we expect young girls to grasp what we ourselves do not completely understand? If we are sucked in by commercials, movies, magazines, t.v. shows and so on, do we really think our girls can simply get over it.
As part of the lesson last night I brought out how even the skinny, minny girl, with perfect skin & hair on the cover of a magazine is not even real. No one can, not even the poor girl in the picture, look like what the world says we need to look like.
I posted the Dove Evolution video on our facebook page this morning along with a link to a professional photo retouching website. And I think we as adult women, need the reminder every so often too.
Iwanex studio click on the portfolio link to see the thumbnails, moving the mouse over the picture will show the before and after.
I was just seriously disappointed to find out that the same company that owns Dove…..owns Axe…… wow talk about complete opposites when it comes to advertising. Seriously at a loss for words.

You are so right! I don’t know if we ever “grow out of” feeling like we have to look a certain way, act a certain way, wear certain clothes, Maybe that’s just the women in all of us. Were always wanting to be better or look better for someone else and not just be true to our own selves…
Can we just take the class with you??? LOL…seems like we could all still learn….:)
By the way…my girls really love the class! Thank You for coming up with the idea of doing it!!
Great post.

You are so right, even as grownups we fall in the traps of false beauty and material possessions. What a great study for the girls in your area
