When teaching Emily and Audrey how to read, I turned to Abeka, and loved their phonics program. {although I did think it too much} We started out with the vowels, adding new letters in each day, blending letters, and finally reading whole words.
Emily & Audrey showed no interest in reading until they were almost in first grade. Even then, Audrey hated going over phonics and sight words. She actually didn’t really start reading well, until she set her mind to it, in the middle of second grade.
So, it’s been about 5 years since I did the whole teach your kid to read thing. Last year Sarah wanted to be included in school SO bad, I started her out with learning the letters, moving on to vowel sounds.
In the past few months she has wanted to learn to read so bad. I mean, like, really bad.
When I try to give her one of her books, she gets upset, takes one of mine and says she is going to practice with it. You try to tell her any different, she will let you know that, yes, she most certainly can practice with a big book.
Even if it is upside down.
She is so impatient when it comes to learning letter sounds. She wants to know RIGHT NOW how to read.
I talked with a friend of mine who suggested we try Bob Books.
So, we ordered the Bob Books.
When the UPS man brought them, she was so excited, to have her school books.
We sat down, opened the books up, talked about them and started on page one. She was doing great, she let me tell her the letter sounds, then we put them together real fast and we had a word. We went over each page I don’t know how many times before moving to the next. She was getting the hang of it, without getting upset about letter sounds.
until we got to this page.
After going through the sounds, putting them together, reading it together, when I told her to read it to me she says
They sat.
Um, no Sarah, that’s not right, let’s look at it again, M says mmmmm A says aaaaa T says tttttt put them together real fast….M A T…. mat. Good, now lets do the other words, does them each correctly, then I tell her to read it to me
They sat.
Seriously y’all, she argued with me after I kept telling her that was NOT right. She even went back to previous pages to show me that Mat sat, Sam sat and then THEY sat.
Bless my heart.
I have a feeling the next 12 years are going to be very interesting.

That’s too funny
At least she’s interested in reading
I learned to read with A Beka too! I still remember some of the books we had!
Lol, that’s so sweet and funny!! Hannah learned with Bob Books, she loves them and recently found they had given her enough confidence to try real books.
We have all those books. I love the mat books
She is determined huh? Too cute. Bob was a favorite at our house. He’s been on the shelf for a while. Sure do miss him!
I think you’re going to have some very interesting years ahead!
I love how every child is different. And special.
That is great! And I concur you have some interesting years ahead. We’ve never seen Bob, my Audrey has used the Hartcourt books.
I love Bob books. Well look at it as a learning experience. She is learning pronouns already. lol.
We read using Bob Books too. I video taped the first book my boys read and posted it on our homeschool blog http://www.passportacademy.com It still makes me tear up! But oh, girls are so different. I told my 4 year old daughter I would teach her to read next year. She told me she can already read…should be interesting over here too.
