Making Butter

We started using the Praire Primer a couple of weeks ago and the girls are loving it.  Although, the first chapter was a little hard to get through for Emily. She kept asking me to stop because she was feeling sick on her stomach. It talks about how Pa had to prepare the deer & pork before they put it away for the winter. The part that really upset her was when Mary & Laura played with the pigs bladder and ate the pig’s tail. I was kind of surprised because we read it a couple of years ago. But then again she did not realize where meats came from.  Anyway, last week for one of our lessons we had to make butter. We had such a fun time doing this. Here are a couple of pictures that we took.

We started out with whipping cream.

I did not have a glass jar with a lid so we had to use one of Sarah’s sippy cups. After we poured the cream into the cup we added two marbles.

Then each of the girls had a turn shaking the cup. (This was their favorite part)

Emily & Sarah wanted to jump on the trampoline.

Our finished butter.

We tried to put them in a butter press but that did not go well at all.
These belonged to my grandfather and we have them sitting on a shelf in the kitchen.
