Here is a wonderful post I found on Raising Godly Daughters ~
Protected: Movies
Not to long ago, David & I decided that we would be more careful about the things we were watching, and let me tell you this was and still is, a very hard thing to do! (I love watching movies!) No more rated R movies and we review every movie prior to watching it on Plugged In or Kids In Mind. We soon found out that our choices were very limited and we started renting less and less movies and now our trips to the theaters are to watch movies with the girls.
Some of the things that we say no to in movies are:
The language ~ if it has GD or the F word in it we do not watch it ~ it is very discouraging to see all the movies that use these two words especially the ones that are geared toward children. (we also skip out on it if it is full of bad language)
S*xual Content ~ we do not watch any movie that has graphic love scenes or inappropriate talk of such things
We also look at violent content and negative content but most times we do not even make it that far because of what is in the first two categories I listed. I encourage you if you have not read a movie review from a Christian perspective, check out Plugged In Online ~ you may be surprised! I know I was ~
One of my favorite movies is “The Notebook” I absolutely love this story! (I watched this at the movies prior to our decision) I had read the book I don’t know how many times and when I heard that it was being made into a movie I was so excited. I went to the movies, watched it and as soon as I saw David, I told him I wanted this movie! He bought it for me for Valentines Day two years ago and I had put off watching it because of the sickness I had with Sarah (I wanted to enjoy it ~ not watch it between trips to the bathroom to throw-up) During this time I kept making over this movie to my young niece, who then wanted to watch it ~ I told her I would need to look up the review to make sure there was nothing inappropriate for her young age. I was so shocked as I read the review that day! I later had to go back and tell her that she could not watch it and I should not either. We had a really good conversation that day and I apologized for not being the example that I should have been in front of her. As bad as I wanted to keep it, I ended up getting rid of it and have not watched it since that day at the movie theater.
This kind of thing has happened over and over to me, that I think I have finally learned my lesson. Since making this decision I have checked out or rented movies (that are too old to find a review on) and have just been blown away by the language or the love scenes. Just last week I popped in Titanic and just within the first 10 minutes they misused God’s name probably 5 times ~ I went and saw this movie 2 times in the theater and have watched it so many times I was surprised that I did not even remember it being in the movie. (btw there is a review for Titanic and I did not think I had to read it because I was sure there was nothing in it)
It is very sad to hear of some of the movies that children are watching! As parents we need to guard our children and even though it is a very hard thing to do in this day and time, we need to keep them innocent! Having small children, I am finding that this is a very hard thing to do!
If you have any recommendation for good family movies please pass them along! I am always looking out for something to watch with the girls. Right now we are into Little House on the Prairie, The Anne Movies, Little Women and The Sound of Music ~ Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated
plugged in also has a section on music
Hope you have a blessed day,
Michelle
